Dyson Omni-Glide Plus Review
The cleaning performance is one of the essential aspects when buying a cordless vacuum cleaner.
Expectations are high for the Omni-glide, as Dyson calls it the specialist for hard floors.
We put the Dyson Omni-glide through its paces in our cleaning test on hard floors.
We spread different kinds of dirt (red lentils, oats, and sand) on various floor types during the review, and then we checked how the Omni-glide coped with them in normal mode.
Cleaning on Hard Floors
We were a bit skeptical at first since it’s a new technology.
But it works ?
It didn’t leave a single grain behind on hard floors.
Overall result: 100%
But it didn’t just suck it up...
...the 360-degree brush with the two soft rollers also doesn’t scatter the dirt.
Unfortunately, this is often the case with other battery vacuums from the competition.
It was also enjoyable to use the device. We could vacuum the flat fast and efficiently, thanks to the excellent maneuverability.
Long story short: Hard floors really are the Dyson Omni-glide’s field of expertise.
Cleaning on Carpets
The Dyson Omni-glide isn’t designed for cleaning carpet. The manufacturer also emphasizes this.
That didn't stop us from testing the cordless vacuum on a carpet.
The result was as expected: quite mixed...
The vacuum managed to remove all the lentils on our long carpet, but it took longer.
There are two main reasons for this: The brushes blocked more often, and it also pushed the dirt in front of the brush.
Conclusion: You can vacuum a carpet with the Dyson Omni-Glide.
It can handle a small bedside rug or bath rug.
However, you can’t expect a deep clean since hard floors are its specialty.
Cleaning in Everyday Life
Cleaning in everyday life is almost enjoyable. It's super easy to move the vacuum around furniture, and it picks up just about any dirt.
We’re spoiled for choice now: Either we need a new vacuum cleaner or the old carpet in the living room has to go. ?
The Handling of the Omni-glide
Dyson is known for its user-friendly devices. The Dyson Omni-glide is no exception.
However, it is an absolute exception when it comes to maneuverability:
No other cordless vacuum can hold a candle to the Dyson Omni-glide here. Dyson made sure of that by developing entirely new technologies and a completely new design.
Manoeuvrability
Everything about the new Omni-glide speaks for manoeuvrability:
- The power button ??
- The specially designed 360-degree brush
- The low weight
- The new stem-like handle
- The joint on the 360-degree brush
- …
Of course, you notice that in the handling.
You can vacuum forwards and backwards without any problems.
You can even move the vacuum cleaner sideways because it has 4 tiny castors that can move in all directions.
The engineers also added some glide pads for even better manoeuvrability.
The stem-like handle allows you to rotate the vacuum around its own axis, and it’s thus much easier to change hands.
There’s also an extremely flexible joint between the suction tube and the brush for perfect cornering.
90 degrees... Not a problem!
The device continues to vacuum without interruption if you change hands, thanks to the new lockable power button.
The Omni-glide has the best manoeuvrability of all vacuums we have tested so far. It makes cleaning almost fun. ?
Power Button
The time has finally come:
Dyson gave the Omni-glide two buttons instead of the usual pistol-like trigger: One for each power setting.
The "highlight": You only have to press the button once, and the device starts vacuuming...no more holding down!
That’s pretty much consistent with the entire concept of the Omni-glide:
High mobility. Because that’s the only way you can move the device from one hand to the other without interruption.
Cleaning Under Furniture (Height of the Floor Brush)
The Omni-glide also gets under furniture like no other vacuum cleaner.
You can lay the vacuum flat on the floor, thanks to the new handle and the super flexible joint of the brush.
Of course, the mobility is somewhat restricted under the wardrobe ?
Nevertheless, we could vacuum far under the bed in the test with its slim design.
Commissioning
The Omni-glide comes in eco-friendly packaging. They didn’t waste a single millimeter of space.
It’s great that Dyson continues to focus on sustainability and doesn’t use plastic for packaging.
You have to give the device a full charge after unpacking.
Then you can start vacuuming.
The plug-in system is self-explanatory. You only have to choose the attachments.
There’s also an instruction manual in the packaging if you have any questions.
Review: The Design of the Dyson Omni-Glide
What is New About the Design?
The Dyson vacuum is specially designed for cleaning hard floors. It’s ultra-light, super easy to use, easy to maintain, and you can remove dirt quickly and efficient with it.
The Omni-glide has an entirely new design.
Dyson says that its new cordless vacuum has an inline design.
This means that the HEPA filter is on top of the slim motor unit, and the handle protrudes. The dirt container is on the bottom side of the motor unit.
You can remove the Omni-glide’s battery where there’s usually a display on other Dyson devices.
We assume that Dyson has dispensed with a display here to make it slimmer...
Keep it simple!
The Size
The size is unusual: the Omni-glide is just 107 cm high.
Is that high enough for a man or woman to use it comfortably?
Vacuuming was quite good at the height of 1.87 meters...
However, at 1.95, the vacuum is a bit too low. So you have to bend down a bit.
Here we’d rather recommend another Dyson device (Best Dyson Cordless Vacuums Review).
The Dyson Omni-glide’s size at a glance
Category | Dimensions |
Total size as a floor vacuum cleaner | 107 cm |
Length motor unit | 50 cm |
Height motor unit | 10 cm |
Brush width | 20 cm |
Brush depth | 14 cm |
Brush height | 8 cm |
How heavy is the Dyson Omni-glide?
It's supposed to be super light...
1.8 kg is very light indeed. This makes the device comfortable to hold and very manoeuvrable.
The Dyson Omni-glide’s weight at a glance
Category | Dimensions |
Total weight as a floor vacuum | 1.8 kg |
Weight of the motor unit | 1 kg |
Suction tube weight | 0.16 kg |
Weight floor nozzle | 0.68 kg |
Accessories of the Dyson Omni Glide in the Review: Next Generation
The accessories determine the versatility of the device.
Dyson was quite innovative here, too. The Omni-glide comes with gadgets of the next generation.
The innovative LED lighting and floor nozzles that can vacuum in all directions are proof of that.
The Dyson Omni-glide is available in two different versions:
- The Dyson Omni-glide
- And the Dyson Omni-glide +
The delivery scope is the only difference: The Omni-glide + comes with an LED crevice nozzle.
Let’s take a closer look at what the new accessories can do.??
The 360-Degree Floor Nozzle: Double Fluffy Attachment
Dyson developed the 360° floor nozzle with two soft rollers for cleaning hard floors.
The two soft rollers of the Fluffy floor nozzle rotate automatically because they have their own electric motor.
The soft rollers pick up dirt very well on hard floors and are also very gentle on sensitive floors, such as parquet.
The Mini Electric Brush
The mini electric brush is an attachment for the hand vacuum mode. It comes in very handy when vacuuming upholstery or car seats.
We also use the Mini Electric Brush to remove dust mites in our mattress.
You'd be surprised what’s hiding in a mattress...
The LED Crevice Nozzle
You can get into cracks and corners with the narrow, elongated attachment that you couldn’t reach otherwise.
A special highlight: The new crevice nozzle has LED lighting. It illuminates all the dark spots and crevices so that you can see the dirt better.
The Surface Attachment
The hard plastic attachment with a wide opening at the end works great for cleaning robust surfaces like vacuuming crumbs from the table.
The Combo Nozzle
This one’s also quite an innovation...
You can use either the hard end or soft bristles with the combo nozzle. It works great for dusting picture frames or removing cobwebs from the ceiling.
The Wall Mount/Charging Station
Of course, you use the wall mount to store the vacuum cleaner. But there’s more to it: Whenever the device is at the wall mount, it charges simultaneously.
That’s very practical!
You just have to plug in the connector at the station.
To store the vacuum cleaner in a space-saving way, you can also attach the mount to the wall.
Your advantage: The wall mount comes with screws, a pen and tape, so you can get started right away. It’s not a big deal, but it shows that Dyson has an eye for detail.
You could also place the mount on a sideboard. Thanks to the clever construction, the unit stands perfectly safe here, and it could even count as decoration. But, of course, that’s a matter of taste.
Another alternative: You can also charge the battery without the vacuum cleaner. Then you can store the device in the storage room and charge the battery on the sideboard, similar to a mobile phone.
Cleaning Features: How Well Does the Dyson Omni-Glide + Clean?
The Dyson Omni-glide came out with flying colours in our cleaning test. That’s thanks to various "features".
First, there’s the Hyperdymium motor: It has a whopping 105,000 rpm (revolutions per minute) and 50 Air watts...
… Who would’ve thought that such a small device could have so much power?!
Dyson also relies on the proven cyclone technology (Read more...) in the Omni-glide and gave it a motor with eight cyclones.
However, the cleaning performance doesn’t only depend on the suction power!
Various other factors also play an essential role here, which we’ll present now.
The 360-Degree Floor Nozzle
The 360-degree floor nozzle is one of those factors...
It comes with two soft rollers – Specially designed for hard floors.
It also has four small wheels that can rotate 360 degrees. This makes the vacuum extremely mobile in any direction.
That makes vacuuming fun!
Advantage: The soft floor rollers are very gentle on any kind of hard floor.
However, as we had expected, the test also showed that the 360-degree floor nozzle is unsuitable for carpets.
Number of Power Settings
Only two instead of three power settings... Are we going back to basics?
Dyson didn’t add a third cleaning level on its new device. As a result, you can only choose between Normal and Turbo mode on the Omni-glide.
You can select the cleaning mode via the two buttons on the vacuum cleaner’s handle.
Only Two Power Settings?!
This is probably because hard floors are less of a challenge for the cordless vacuum than carpets.
Our test showed that the two power settings are sufficient for the Omni-glide's field of application.
The Conversion to a Cordless Handheld Vacuum
Thanks to its 2-in-1 function, you can convert the Omni-glide into a cordless hand vacuum in two steps.
The conversion is simple and intuitive:
Simply remove the suction tube by pushing the red button and select another attachment.
A Superstar as a Hand Vacuum Cleaner
The weight and powerful suction make the Omni-glide an excellent hand vacuum.
It weighs just 1 kg as a cordless hand vacuum. So you can vacuum the ceiling with just one hand.
Thanks to the slim design, you can vacuum even in tight places, such as in the car. (Check out our Best Car Vacuum Cleaner with Battery Review).
How Loud is the Cordless Vacuum Cleaner for Hard Floors?
How important is the volume when buying a vacuum?
The truth is: they’re all loud. You can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs, can you?
But there are some differences:
The Dyson Omni-glide ranged from 65 dB in normal mode to 70 dB in turbo mode in the Smart Home Fox volume test.
This volume is more or less standard for cordless vacuums and isn’t particularly disturbing.
What’s the runtime of the Omni-glide?
We could vacuum for 24 minutes in normal mode in our review.
That is below average. However, you have to put this into perspective: The device has a lot of power but only a relatively small/weak battery.
You have to pay the price for such excellent mobility and lightweight...
Is it Possible to Change the Battery?
You can simply click out the battery (at the back of the handle) and replace it with a spare battery.
This way, you can simply double the runtime.
Are There Replacement Batteries?
You can buy spare batteries for the Dyson Omni-glide.
Whether a battery breaks or you want to have a spare battery to double the runtime, you can conveniently buy them online.
Charging Time:
The Dyson Omni-glide’s charging time is 3.5 hours.
You can either plug it directly into the charging station or use the wall mount to charge it.
Is the Omni-glide Difficult to Maintain?
The quicker and easier the maintenance, the better the cordless hoover. Nobody wants to spend a lot of time maintaining a vacuum cleaner.
Maintenance of the new cordless vacuum is straightforward and consists of four regular tasks:
- Emptying the dirt container
- Cleaning the dirt container
- Cleaning the HEPA filter
- Cleaning the floor nozzles
Emptying the Omni-Glide’s dirt container
You have to remove the suction tube to empty the dirt container. Then you can hold the device over the dustbin, press the red button at the bottom and push the dirt container forward.
The lid pops open, and the dirt falls into the dustbin.
If there are any stuck hairs, the dirt may not fall out directly. A little tapping usually does the job.
Attention! We recommend that people suffering from allergies empty the dirt container outside. That way, you can make sure that the nasty house dust won’t sneak back into your flat.
We exhausted the 0.2 l capacity with lentils during the test and noticed that a lentil got stuck in the lid’s seal. As a result, the lid couldn’t close properly.
We had to remove the lentil with a pointed object.
The dirt container of the Omni-glide has a size of only 0.2 liters, which is relatively small. So you have to empty it more often.
It seems like Dyson assumes that there’s less dirt on hard floors than on carpets, so they chose a smaller dirt container to improve manoeuvrability.
If you prefer a larger dirt container, the Dyson V11 might be the way to go.
The Dyson V11 Absolute’s dirt container has a size of 0.76 l, which is sufficient.
Cleaning the Dirt Container
You can easily remove the dirt container by using the handle (red lever).
That’s very practical. Then you can simply rinse it under running water.
Cleaning the HEPA Filter
The vacuum cleaner can separate tiny particles from the air with the HEPA filter (particulate air filter). That includes even viruses and bacteria.
Maintenance is straightforward:
Simply twist off the HEPA filter at the top and slip it over the handle. Then, you can rinse the filter under cold water.
Your advantage: It’s a so-called long-life filter, i.e. it lasts a very long time, so it’s pretty unlikely that you only have to change it. That’s good for the environment and your wallet.
Are There Replacement Filters for the Dyson?
Of course, you can buy a replacement filter from the Dyson online shop if yours ever breaks or something like that.
Cleaning the 360-Degree Floor Nozzle
You can easily remove the soft castors.
All you have to do is press the small lever on the side of the brush, and then you can remove them.
It works great!
Then you just have to tap out or wash the soft rollers.
You should inspect the floor brush regularly and clean it as needed. This ensures that the cleaning performance of the standard attachment remains high.
Are There Any Spare Parts for the Dyson Omni-Glide?
Whether you’re looking for a replacement battery or accessories, you can get spare parts for the Omni-glide online.
The Omni-Glide as a Second Device
Dyson says the Omni-glide fills a niche: cleaning devices for hard floors.
At Smart Home Fox, we think it fills another niche: It’s a great addition to a robot vacuum or a powerful Dyson V11 or any other vacuum.
The Omni-Glide and a Robot Vacuum
The significant advantage of the Omni-glide is that it's always at hand because you can store it in a space-saving way.
You can quickly grab it whenever you need to clean up something fast.
For the main weekly cleaning, you can use a more powerful device - a corded or even a modern 2-in-1 cordless vacuum.
The Omni-Glide and a Robot Vacuum
You probably heard of it already.
Robot vacuum cleaners are getting better and better and can do most of the work for us (take a look at our Roborock S7 review).
But they can't do everything yet. In the corners and on the ceilings or upholstery, we still have to clean ourselves. And this is where we think that the Dyson Omni-glide would be an excellent addition. That’s the field of expertise of the lightweight vacuum cleaner, which is always quick at hand.
We tested the best robot vacuum cleaners. Read our review about the best robot vacuum cleaners if you want to know more about robot vacuum cleaners.
The Price of the Dyson Omni-Glide
Dyson’s price is always pretty high, but we customers get premium quality and excellent service in return.
You save a lot with this cordless vacuum in the long term compared to a classic vacuum.
And we don't just mean the extra effort...
...You also save money because you don't have to buy expensive filters or bags regularly.
Conclusion of our Dyson Omni-Glide Review
Here comes our conclusion on the Dyson Omni-glide + ?
You can’t compare the cordless device with conventional cordless vacuums because it was explicitly designed for a niche:
The device is very well suited for cleaning hard floors since it’s quickly at hand and has super manoeuvrability.
It’s very efficient for this niche and, above all, gentle on your precious floors.
It also proves to be an excellent handheld vacuum.
Cleaning on the ceiling work or vacuuming with one hand will be child’s play with it!
In our opinion, the runtime could be longer. 24 minutes is very short. However, there’s also an easy solution at hand: you just need a replacement battery.
But the charging time of around 3.5 hours is also quite long in this context.
The dirt container (0.2 l volume) could also be larger, but it’s sufficient for quick uses.
That's probably the price we have to pay for the light weight and super mobility.
We liked these two features very much, and the cleaning performance on hard floors was also outstanding. ??
We recommend the device if you:
... have to clean mainly (sensitive) hard floors.
… you don't have to vacuum an extensive area at a time, i.e. you have a small flat.
… or if you are looking for a device to complement your robot vacuum
You get quality for your money here.
